There are numerous ways to get to Amsterdam, Holland. Budget travellers and businessmen alike have a range of options at their disposal.
Those who prefer a quick journey may prefer to travel by air. Schipol International Airport, Holland’s main airport and arguably the largest airport in the world, is located just outside of Amsterdam. International travellers can fly directly into Amsterdam through this airport and many discounted charter flights from North America are said to be available. Some airlines offer promotions such as a free trip within Europe that is included in the ticket price. A cheaper air option may be to fly to a nearby city and travel into Amsterdam via the cheaper bus or train options.
Transport from the airport to Amsterdam city is available via the train service to Centraal Station or the bus service that drops passengers off at any one of approximately 15 hotels. The train picks up passengers every 15 minutes and the journey lasts about 20 minutes. The bus takes about a half hour to make each trip. There is also the more expensive taxi as an option, which takes approximately 20–45 minutes of travel.
Those who prefer to land in a nearby city, such as London or Paris, may also choose to drive into Amsterdam. The drive from Paris to Amsterdam is roughly six hours long. Traveling by road is generally discouraged because of the narrow streets and high parking rates in Amsterdam. Long-term parking can be arranged at the airport or Centraal Station for a fixed fee. This would be a better option than leaving it unattended in a suburb in Amsterdam.
As another mode of transport, Eurail passes can be used across The Netherlands. Centraal Station offers regular connections to the rest of the country and neighbouring countries as well. Train-ferry services to the UK are available. British travellers can also use the Eurostar train that travels through the Channel.
The more adventurous and athletic travellers may want to try cycling. Since The Netherlands is reputed to be “one of the flattest places in the world,” dedicated bike paths can be found throughout the country. For a small fee, bikes are permitted on board trains and ferries. Backpackers, students, or those on a tight budget may find this to be their best option by far since it affords easy transportation into and around Amsterdam without the heavy parking fees.
