Amsterdam Is a Top European Location

It must be stated however, that Amsterdam contains a whole lot more than these elements including museums, parks, bicycles, tulips, beer, canals, bridges and of course cheese! Amsterdam is a top European location for a weekend break or vacation.

Some people when planning a few days away first search for a place to stay in the desired location. There are also others that first check out what places they would like to visit within the chosen area. This type of person that prepares a basic travel itinerary before arranging lodging may then search for a hotel room or rented accommodation close to the places of interest.

For the type of traveler who wishes firstly to read up about places of interest in Amsterdam, one feature of this attractive city that should not and cannot be missed is the city’s canals.

The sheer numbers of canals inside Amsterdam have earned the nickname of ‘The Venice of the North” for the city. There are four major canals in the city center and several smaller canals. The main canals are called Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Singel.

There is a boat service that operates along the canals on different routes. Visitors will find that there are different stops along the way that provide the perfect form of transport for travelers to spend time at various museums, shops and attractions while in Amsterdam.

A cruise along one of the canals provides an excellent way to see the sights of the city. This is a fun way to travel around Amsterdam with a map in hand in order to get one’s bearings. In addition, these boat rides include commentaries during the trip which are conducted in different languages. It is possible to buy a day pass so that visitors may go on and off the boats as convenient. It should also be noted that the purchase of such a day boat pass may provide discounts on entry tickets to various places of interest around the city.

Visitors may also enjoy dinner while cruising on one of the range of canal boats available. Tourists may enjoy an illuminated view of Amsterdam at night while aboard the cruiser. These tours should be reserved in advance, especially during the summer months, in order to avoid disappointment. Such an evening out on the waters of Amsterdam is one to be remembered for a long time and should not be missed while in the city. In addition, there are other ways to sample the canals of Amsterdam as there are boat services that offer drinks and music as a form of entertainment while cruising.

Apartments and hotel rooms can be located that are situated right on the canal. This may present the visitor with a true taste of Amsterdam life that is also close to the center, to public transport and to other top Amsterdam city sites.
